Abstract

Entering September 2009, most commodities in the city of Bandar Lampung experienced quite high price increases, thus encouraging inflation. The group that provides the most dominant contribution to the formation of inflation is the foodstuffs group, mainly due to high consumer demand for commodities in this group in line with the arrival of the month of Ramadan and preparations to welcome the Idul Fitri holiday 1430 H. Apart from the foodstuffs group, commodities - Commodities in the clothing, prepared food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco, housing and transport and communications groups also experienced price increases. This is in line with the increasing public need for these commodities. In general, the increase in prices of various commodities triggered inflation in the city of Bandar Lampung in September 2009 amounting to 2.66 percent. Inflation in the city of Bandar Lampung is ranked first out of 66 cities where price developments are observed. Overall, 63 cities experienced inflation and 3 cities experienced deflation. The largest deflation occurred in Sorong at 0.98 percent.

Based on the calculation of the consumer price index (CPI), inflation occurred due to an increase in the index in five expenditure groups, namely foodstuffs by 7.22 percent, clothing by 2.27 percent, prepared food, drinks, cigarettes and tobacco by 1.63 percent, housing by 1.04 percent and transport and communications at 0.07 percent. Meanwhile, the health and education services, recreation and sports groups did not experience changes.

Several commodities that dominantly contribute to inflation include red chilies, tempeh, granulated sugar, garlic, house rent, beef, filtered clove cigarettes, tuna, mackerel/puffed fish, and purebred chicken. Until September 2009, the inflation rate for Bandar Lampung City based on the calendar year was 4.45 percent and "year on year" inflation (September 2009 to September 2008) was 5.22 percent.
