In October 2009, most commodities in the city of Bandar Lampung experienced quite large price declines. This decrease in prices was mainly due to a decrease in demand after the previous month, namely before the Eid al-Fitr 1430 H, there was a fairly high price increase due to the soaring demand for most goods and services. The fall in prices for most commodities this month caused deflation in Bandar Lampung City, namely 0.23 percent. The group that contributed most to deflation was the foodstuffs group, mainly due to the decline in consumer demand for most commodities in this group. Apart from the foodstuffs group, several commodities in the clothing, health services and transportation groups also experienced a decline in demand, causing prices to fall. Deflation in the city of Bandar Lampung is ranked 52nd out of 66 cities where price developments were observed. Overall, 45 cities experienced inflation and 21 cities experienced deflation. The highest inflation occurred in Padang at 1.78 percent. Meanwhile, the lowest inflation occurred in Banda Aceh with deflation of 1.30 percent.
Based on the calculation of the consumer price index (CPI), inflation occurred due to a decrease in the index in four expenditure groups, namely foodstuffs by -1.14 percent, clothing -0.12 percent, health services -0.02 percent and transport by -0.06 percent. Meanwhile, the processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco and housing groups experienced inflation, while the education, recreation and sports groups experienced no change.
Some of the dominant commodities that contribute to deflation include purebred chicken meat, mackerel, coconut, fresh squid, shallots, tuna, purebred chicken eggs, bean sprouts, flying fish and fresh anchovies. Until October 2009, the inflation rate for Bandar Lampung City based on the calendar year was 4.20 percent and "year on year" inflation (October 2009 to October 2008) was 4.30 percent.
